'It's a Wonderful Life' sequel coming in 2015

...A sequel to the iconic 1946 film "It's a Wonderful Life" is currently in the works, with the release date tentatively set for the 2015 holiday season, Variety reports.

Star Partners and Hummingbird Prods. are collaborating on the production of the sequel, titled "It's A Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story," and the screenplay has already been written by Bob Farnsworth and Martha Bolton...

Anyone know copyright law? What is "lapsed copyright?" It must not be the same as public domain because, according to my copyright class many moons ago, once something goes into public domain, it's public domain forever.
